Catching Up

Detective films stepdaughter undressing, Councilman wants Redskins back in DC, Dude in Food Lion tries to set himself on fire, More strip clubs SHUT DOWN.

Yes I’m kinda playing catch up after my brief mind meld with a coconut pie on Christmas Day.  A couple of things completely slipped by me like DC Councilman Vincent Orange’s plot to upstage all dc mayoral candidates bill that would essentially bring the Redskins back to DC.  It’s always good to hear that more strip clubs have been shut down. I get comments and email saying otherwise but I’m still glad about the closings and you all still have the right to your opinion.  I don’t know what to say about the guy in Food Lion who tried to set himself on fire or the FREAK Detective Keith Tabron who videotaped his stepdaughter undressing for nine months.  Old freak. Just an old freak.

RFK StadiumDC Councilman Vincent Orange proposed legislation that has the signing support of 6 other DC council people.  The bill asks DC to conduct a feasibility study of tearing down RFK Stadium and Langston Golf Course and rebuilding as a 100k domed super sports center that would include an 18-hole PGA Championship Golf 31 Course, a Multimedia Soundstage, the Ellsworth J. Davis Film and Photography Center, 32 an Indoor Waterpark, and hotel accommodations.  See the legislation HERE.   I think Prince George’s County has cause to be alarmed.  Even though the legislation in scant on details of how to raise money for all this, the bill does detail everything else from square footage of restaurants to names for sound stages and types of retail.  The bill is explicit in that it wants the stadium to be an economic force, “A domed facility would serve as an economic development engine for the District. A 100,000 seat domed multi-purpose sport and recreation facility would provide retail, entertainment and the opportunity for the Washington football team to return to the District. It would play host to Super Bowls, Final Fours, the Olympics, Federation Internationale de Football Association (“FIFA”) Soccer, All-Star games, Professional Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts (“MMA”) matches, live concerts, national political conventions, large events, and much more.”  Considering that Prince George’s County only brought in $10.8 million in Admissions and Amusement Taxes last year and is expected to bring in about the same amount next year, I’d say that FedEx field has been an economic bust for us.
MatchLitFeaturedImageAlso I didn’t know about some dude setting himself on fire inside a grocery store on Central Avenue. An Upper Marlboro man who tried to set himself on fire inside a Bowie grocery store is now facing charges, fire officials in Prince George’s County announced Thursday. Markus DeAngelo Callends, 19, is accused of dousing himself and other products in the Central Avenue Food Lion grocery store with an ignitable liquid. He tried to start a fire but failed, Prince George’s County Fire spokesman Mark Brady said. Callends has been charged with first degree attempted arson and reckless endangerment. Both are felonies. He faces up to 35 years in prison if found guilty of both charges. Callends is being held on a $100,000 bond.   I tell you, Upper Marlboro has been in the news with two murders, now this.  And on Christmas evening, there were two bad fires, one in Capitol Heights and one in Upper Marlboro, 14900 block of Rolling Meadows Lane.  Thankfully, no one was hurt in either fire.
Strip Club SignsTwo businesses being used for adult entertainment purposes have been shut down.  Prince George’s County Police Department issued violation notices to the tenant and property managers of Rose Cafe and Puzzles Event Center, ordering the businesses closed on December 20, 2013. Rose Cafe is located in the 5400 block of Marlboro Pike in Capitol Heights and Puzzles Event Center is located in the 3600 block of Saint Barnabas Road in Temple Hills.  The businesses have been operating without the required use and occupancy permit. Both have been issued several violation notices in the past, specifically related to adult entertainment activities. The violation notices served on December 20, 2013 were issued after investigators confirmed both businesses were continuing to operate as adult entertainment clubs.  Both businesses will remain closed pending the outcome of an appeals hearing.

Detective Tabron video camera
Detective Keith Tabron

A 23-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department and *sigh* Upper Marlboro resident has pleaded guilty to secretly videotaping his adult stepdaughter while she was undressing. Detective Keith Tabron pleaded guilty to multiple counts of video surveillance with prurient intent in July. According to prosecutors in the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, Tabron videotaped his stepdaughter in the bathroom as she was getting in and out of the shower as well as in her bedroom as she was undressing.  NBCWashington reported that court records show Tabron was charged with 50 counts of secretly videotaping the victim over the course of nine months in 2011 and 2012. A spokesperson for the State’s Attorney’s Office said the victim was the daughter of Tabron’s estranged wife who lives out of state. The victim was staying at Tabron’s home because she had “fallen on hard times,” according to spokeswoman Gina Ford.
According to Ford, the victim realized she was being spied on when she noticed fresh paint in her bathroom. When she inspected the paint she found one of the cameras. The victim called a cousin who found the second camera in her bedroom. They traced the wires back to Tabron’s home office and called police. Tabron has been suspended from the police force without pay, according to a spokesperson for D.C. police Chief Cathy Lanier. Attempts to reach Tabron for comment were unsuccessful. Tabron joined the force in 1990 and, according to a department press release, he was named 2nd District Detective of the Year in 2012 for his work getting a defendant to confess to 28 burglaries. Ford says because Tabron had no previous criminal record prosecutors did not request that he be required to register as a sex offender. Surveillance with prurient interest is a registerable offense in Maryland.
