Frying Pan to Fire: PGPS Hires Criminal, Zane Owes Taxes, DC’s Homeless in PGCo (Demo)

DC is shuttling its homeless residents to hotels in Prince George’s County and Tommy Wells, a DC councilman who’s also running for Mayor of DC held a new conference in the parking lot of a Prince George’s County hotel to address the dire situation and BLAST Mayor Vincent Gray’s handling of the homeless.  Tracee Wilkins of NBC4 covered the story of homeless DC residents who have to be displaced in housing located in Cheverly, MD.  Pedro Rebiero, Director, Office of Communications Office for the DC Government called the whole situation a “shameless political stunt.”  Yes Tommy Wells is taking advantage of a bad situation but the District of Columbia creates ample opportunity every time it prices out the working class.  The young woman featured in Tracee Wilkins’ story has A JOB but she’s homeless.  DC is only concerned with housing the young and rich.  Housing for the working class is slim to none.  Story from NBC4 below:
Tommy WellsDue to overcrowding at local shelters, the D.C. government has more than 60 homeless individuals to a Prince George’s County hotel. The District’s shelters, temporary shelters and hotels that accept homeless are all full. “This is not a facility that’s intended to house families for months at a time,” D.C. Council member and mayoral candidate Tommy Wells said. Wells held a news conference at the site of the hotel, the Howard Johnson Inn in Cheverly, Tuesday. “We have a meeting room that we’ve dedicated just to DHS so they have their own private facility,” the hotel’s general manager said, when asked if the homeless were being fed. A spokesperson with D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray released the following statement to News4 regarding the situation. “It’s a shameless and political stunt. Under District law, we are legally required to house people who seek housing … we’re the only jurisdiction with that rule. D.C. spends more on homeless services that it ever has in the past and this administration continues to increase spending on homelessness.” News4’s Tracee Wilkins spoke with a 21-year-old working mother who has been living at the Howard Johnson for the past three weeks. “Ultimately, I just want to find independent living on my own.”

Chalkboard Crime LessonPrince George’s County Public Schools is in process of putting Donnie Dukes on administrative leave.  Hopefully they’ve accomplished that already.  Donnie Dukes, according to the Washington Post, charged DC Public Schools $300,000 for transportation services his business never provided.  Currently, Dukes is a  special education teacher in Prince George’s County  at the Parkdale High School in Riverdale Park.  Prince George’s County School officials learned Wednesday, Jan. 22ndthat Dukes pleaded guilty to overbilling the District for bus rides that his company never provided to students.  From The Washington Post,

“Dukes, who also previously worked as a principal of Options Public Charter School, was hired in Prince George’s in August 2012. Dukes works at Parkdale High School in Riverdale Park, school officials said. Robert Gaskin, the director of human resources for Prince George’s County schools, said Thursday that the school system was in the process of putting Dukes on administrative leave pending an investigation into his previous work history and “what he informed us upon his hire.” After working at Options, court papers say, Dukes became a compliance officer for the District’s public school system in 2008. He was responsible for arranging transportation for special-needs students who receive educational services outside D.C. In October, the D.C. attorney general filed a civil complaint alleging that three Options managers and others created a contracting scheme to divert more than $3 million from the school to two for-profit companies they founded. Those allegations have led to a criminal investigation. Dukes’s plea agreement, which includes a cooperation provision, suggests that he is helping federal investigators in their criminal examination of Options.
