SAE Fraternity of True Gentlemen (Demo)

If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands (clap-clap).  If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands (clap-clap).  If you’re happy and you know it then your face will surely show it.  If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands (clap-clap).  That’s the melody used in a chant by members of The University of Oklahoma’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.  The lyrics they substituted brought anything but happiness: “There will never be a nigger in SAE (clap clap)…You can hang them from a tree but they’ll never pledge with me.  There will never…”

Selma March 1965As more than 70,000 wonderful people gathered to commemorate the events and history of Bloody Sunday (March 7th, 1965) in Selma, Alabama,  Oklahoma’s SAE fraternity dealt our nation a assbackward blow with the surfacing of this video.  To juxtapose the the two events is depressing: Selma/SAE.  Umph.  Even in this there is a glimmer of hope and that hope is this: someone or some people on that bus went public with the video.  Some person on that bus knew that what was taking place under the cloak of greek fraternity life was really inbred racism that should be exposed to our post racial world. Check out this video of the SAE fraternity chant leader when he realized he was being videotaped:  This guy’s reaction is priceless.

For certain there still a racism problem in the SAE fraternity (story on MLK Day racist party HERE) and, yes still, in the United States. What encourages me is that no matter how much the perpetrators of this racist garbage try to wave us off and get us to not record, we keep recording, exposing, and challenging.  I say “us” to mean people with some sense.  Sunday night, the national SAE organization closed its Oklahoma chapter and Oklahoma University President David Boren has evicted the fraternity from the campus. Good, swift, decisive actions was needed because our racial climate is still clouded with names like Travon Martin, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner.

Maryland Beta SAESAE has a chapter (Maryland Beta) at the University of Maryland, College Park.  I wonder if they knew that their Oklahoma fraternity brothers and, from what I’ve read, Austin, TX brothers chant about hanging niggers from trees?  Unlike racists, I won’t attribute the actions of a few to the whole, but I need the actions of this fraternity to get better.  In addition to overt racist actions like their chant, this fraternity has a history of pledge deaths: 10 deaths since 2006
This all kinda flies in the face of the fraternity’s creed:
[box type=”info”] The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe. – John Walter Wayland[/box]
